How to Hang a Hammock Tent

by Jacob Malos 17 Feb 2023

A hammock tent is a unique and versatile piece of outdoor equipment that combines the comfort and ease of a traditional hammock with the shelter and protection of a tent. Hanging a hammock tent can seem daunting at first, but with a few simple steps and some helpful tips, you can quickly and easily set up your own hammock tent and enjoy the great outdoors in style and comfort. In this blog, we'll walk you through the process of how to hang a hammock tent and provide tips on how to do it efficiently.

Step 1: Choose the Right Spot

The first step in hanging a hammock tent is to find the right spot. Look for a spot that is flat and free of rocks, roots, and other obstacles that could damage your hammock tent. Also, make sure there are trees or other sturdy structures nearby that you can use to anchor your hammock tent.

Step 2: Set Up Your Suspension System

The next step is to set up your suspension system. This system typically includes two straps, ropes, or cords that you'll use to attach your hammock tent to the trees or other structures. Some hammock tents come with their own suspension system, while others require you to purchase one separately.

To set up your suspension system, wrap the straps or ropes around the trees or other structures you plan to use as anchors. Make sure they're secure and won't slip or come loose. Then, attach the straps or ropes to the loops or rings on your hammock tent, making sure they're evenly spaced and balanced.

Step 3: Adjust the Height and Tension

Once you've attached your hammock tent to the suspension system, you'll need to adjust the height and tension. Ideally, your hammock tent should be about 18 inches off the ground, high enough to keep you off the damp ground but not so high that it's difficult to climb in and out. You can adjust the height by raising or lowering the straps or ropes on the trees or other structures.

You'll also want to make sure your hammock tent is level and taut. Adjust the tension on the suspension system until the hammock tent is level and there's no slack in the fabric. This will ensure that you're comfortable and secure while you're lounging or sleeping.

Tips for Hanging a Hammock Tent

Now that you know the basic steps for hanging a hammock tent, here are a few additional tips to help you do it efficiently and safely:

  • Check the weight limit: Make sure you know the weight limit for your hammock tent and suspension system, and don't exceed it. Overloading your hammock tent can be dangerous and cause damage to the fabric or suspension system.

  • Use tree-friendly straps: To protect the trees you're using as anchors, use straps that are designed to be tree-friendly, such as wide straps or webbing. Avoid using ropes or cords that can damage the bark and harm the tree.

  • Test the suspension system: Before you get in the hammock tent, test the suspension system to make sure it's secure and can hold your weight. Give it a few gentle tugs to make sure it's stable and won't come loose.

  • Bring a tarp or rainfly: If you're camping in an area with rain or other inclement weather, bring a tarp or rainfly to cover your hammock tent and keep you dry.

  • Practice proper hammock etiquette: When you're camping in a popular area, be mindful of other campers and practice proper hammock etiquette. Don't set up your hammock tent in a crowded or high-traffic area, and be respectful of others' space and privacy.

Hanging a hammock tent may seem intimidating at first, but with a little practice and these helpful tips, you will be ready for your next camping experience.
